Xecut: Initial Post

Welcome to Xecut

Hello Decentrala!

You probably noticed the new place in the Event list for this month so we decided to make this post to clarify and discuss some stuff.

First of all, Xecut is a community-run hackerspace in Belgrade located not so far from the Vukov Spomenik.
The main focus of this space is cool people doing cool things =)
Feel free to check our website to get more information about what we do and what we have (and please let me know if something is incorrect with the Serbian version :D).

Below are several points we have prepared to answer your possible questions or simply to publicly state some aspects or rules.

Stuff and Colorful Labels

You could see different labels on different things or shelves in the Xecut. Colors of these labels follow this convention:

  • White: feel free to use this according to common sense.
  • Green: it’s just like white but with the owner’s name so you could contact this person to ask something or bring some sad news.
  • Yellow: you need permission from the owner or at least a resident to use this thing or anything from the shelf.
  • Red: it’s a restricted item. Usually it is an unfinished project or some personal things.

If you have any doubts, please do not hesitate to ask about the status of anything.
If you want to take something out of the Xecut you must contact the owner or a resident first.

Most of the stuff transitioned from DC Krov was labeled already but feel free to change the labels if you want and use your shelves according to your needs.

Thank you very much for your huge contribution to the pool of shared items and consumables!

Unfortunately you could notice that the floor space of our place isn’t unlimited. We are not going to teach you how to use your storage space but want to encourage you to think about the current and future amount of unused stuff on your shelves: we know how hard it is to give away any cool things but nobody (and I’m sure you agree with us) wants to transform the Xecut into the jam-packed warehouse.

Physical Access

Xecut works a bit differently than Decentrala: we have some hierarchy with the owners, residents and visitors.
This system is now based on personal connections: we usually have a vote before accepting each new resident.

Roles exist for reasons but the main idea is that visitors cannot stay in the space if no residents are present.

According to our agreement at least 2 or 3 of Decentrala members need to become residents.
We’ve got your idea of monthly resident rotation and it’s a great idea aligned with your core principles!
Unfortunately we have to take some time out to adapt our inner processes and propose some solution a bit later.

  • Our current processes are not yet ready for regular rotation.
  • We don’t want to provide any anonymous credentials or hardware tokens for security reasons.

No need to worry! I (or someone else) intend to provide access to the Xecut for all events listed in the schedule until we find a suitable solution.

Network Access

Our network is currently quite simple and designed to meet needs that differ from those you mentioned during our conversations.
We need some time to think about it because this topic is somehow connected with the previous one =)

Please provide (as a comment to this post, for example) the description of the desired network architecture, connections and services so we could find the optimal solution for both communities.
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that all points in this description will be fulfilled but will try to find a good compromise at least.

First Decentrala Event in the Xecut

Some of our residents and visitors do not know much about Decentrala but would like to learn!

It seems that moving is a good time to look back and remember all your principles, ideas, projects, and cool events.
I recommend that you get together on 19 January and prepare a presentation, and perhaps even some slides, so that on 24 or 25 of January you can tell Xecut visitors about yourself.

Let me know if it’s okay for you =)

In conclusion, I would like to say that we are happy to have you and are confident that together we can build a bright future for both of our communities.

If this post seems moody, I apologise: it is natural to have some concerns and tension at the very beginning =)

Remember that you can also visit Xecut on any other day outside of the schedule if any resident is in hackerspace. Feel free to work on projects, access your stuff or just visit any of our events.

We’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have. And once again, welcome!

First of all, thank you so much to the Xecut hackerspace for letting us join, looking forward to doing cool stuff together =)

We need to do something about those bulky pc cases ASAP. Lets try to organize a repair event soon. And try to throw away useless garbage (<- this will be very hard, but i believe we can do it  )
